Shakedown Street (Meaningless Re-Edit) - The Grateful Dead
Dismissed on its release in 1978 by Rolling Stone as "an artistic dead end” with “the disco tinges merely adding to the catastrophe”, Shakedown Street now seems like one of the Grateful Dead's best studio tracks. Well-known as a Iive act devoted to meandering psychedelic blues 'jams', this track is unusually funky and to the point for them - and now its groove has been bumped up by the excellent Meaningless Edits from Italy. Although it barely troubled the Top 40 the song did go on inspire Deadheads to name the famous black market vending areas outside Grateful Dead concerts 'Shakedown Street' in the 1980s and '90s.
